Interesting Article in Chronicle of Philathropy: Technology for Greater Good

HI, everyone, don't know if you saw a very interesting article in the Chronicle of Philanthropy by Marica Sharp of Millenium Communications called Technological Revolution for the Greater Good (attached). It's a nice summary of the kinds of online activities that are spurring greater use of the Internet by nonprofits and greater promise of increased efficiency, community building, participation.

It is, of course, well written as Marcia is a great writer. But, I have a few challenges to pose to it, particularly as it relates to what we reported in our paper, Power to the Edges.

First, Marcia talks a lot about large investments in large platforms. What we've seen over the past few years is that the Internet is fertile ground for small investments in small efforts, particularly by individual activists, which spiral into big things. This is how moveon.org, meetup.com, and even E-Bay started. Rather than spend our time as a sector spending millions of dollars on big platforms, we should be spending our energy seeding small, agile efforts that can be sustained and scale as necessary.

Report Unveiled in NYC!

Submitted by admin on 5 May, 2005 - 10:36pm.

Hi, folks. We had a very exciting week unveilieng "Power to the Edges" at the Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement (PACE) in NYC this week.

We had a very enthusiastic group of about thirty people who listened while I walked through the highlights of the report. Jill Blair, chief honcho of PACE, then asked smaller groups to talk about what the distinct opportunities and hurdles are for this new field of online civic engagement.

People were excited about the opportunities for engaging young people and potentially people from marginalized and uderserved communities using the new, digital technologies -- particularly cell phones.

Amazing Event Going On in Iraq!

Hi, everybody. I received an email this morning:

Dear all,

let me use the opportunity of this new list to point you at a unique experiment that will happen over the next days. There will be a live stream from the Merbed poetry festival in Basrah, Iraq.

www.streamtime.org

The (security) situation is tense. As you may have heard, there were student demonstrations in Basrah last week.

Yours, Geert

This is an amazing event that so perfectly illustrates the beautiful intersection of art, technology and democracy. Take a look at it and let me know what you think!

Where Do New Ideas Come From?

Submitted by Allison on 30 March, 2005 - 3:15pm.

Hi, everybody, and welcome to our blog! As you know, at E-Volve we're helping to create an infrastructure of new, free tools for folks to use to connect to one another and act together for a public person. An enviromental campaign, a petition drive to get more funding for health research, a series of house parties to talk about education policy. These are great things happening, and people are hungry for even more. But I"ve been struggling with a question that I want to pose to everyone:

Where do new ideas for communities that have are inclusive and fair come from?

Do they come from the ground up from grassroots efforts and then get moved around?
